Through the progress of a patient with end-stage osteoarthritis, Dr. Snyder describes the use of Genesis II Zirconium component for the knee replacement. Aired on Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at 11 p.m.

· Ceramic Knee Implant - Innovative knee implant makes clinical debut.

In the Summer of 2000 we became the first practice in Ohio to use a new ceramic material, oxidized zirconium, for total knee arthroplasty. The surface of this material is much harder and more wettable than standard materials used, and is one of the most biocompatible materials known to man. As a result, the plastic components wear less and the implant lasts longer. It has the potential to increase the longevity of knee implants from the current 15 to 20 years up to 30 or 40 years.
A team of orthopedic surgeons, including Dr. Mark Snyder, helped design the product for Smith & Nephew. The implant is not yet available for general release, and only a handful of physicians in the country are permitted to use it.

· Getting around with handhelds - How caregivers are beginning to turn to personal data assistants (PDAs) and other handheld devices for easy, ubiquitous access to online health care data.

·Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants:New technology in the treatment of arthritic hips

Michael Welch, M.D., and Mark Snyder, M.D., are the first orthopaedic surgeons in Cincinnati to use a recently approved total hip implant. The revolutionary technology is the first true metal-on-metal artificial hip joint.
The metal-on-metal surface offers a wear rate that is 100 times lower than traditional metal-on-polyethylene. Debris from the wearing of metal on polyethylene surfaces is a leading cause of hip implant revisions. The introduction of this implant reduces the revision concern in the younger patient population, including aging baby-boomers who may need replacement due to active lifestyles and expected longevity.

·New Strategy for Revision Knee Replacements - Dr. Snyder was featured in the Cincinnati Business Courier in an article on new strategy for Knee replacements that cuts the surgery time in half and provides for fewer complications for patients.

· What's new? Image-guided surgery (IGS) – Dr. Snyder has been collaborating with BrainLAB to refine their global positioning system for use in navigated orthopedic surgery. This will allow physicians to provide treatment that improves medical outcomes by enabling more accuracy and less invasiveness than traditional surgery.
